The Futuro Media Group was awarded $7,000 to research, create a short video about, and engage South Dakota and U.S. audiences in, the life of Zitkála-Šá (1876–1938), Native American musician, educator, and civil rights activist born on the Yankton Sioux Reservation. She will be featured in UNLADYLIKE, a multimedia series profiling unsung American women from a century ago, launching in 2020 to honor the centennial of women's suffrage. Spanning humanities fields of U.S and women's history, and gender and ethnic studies, this project studies how Progressive Era (1890s-1920s) factors and sensibilities spurred women to action, and how they challenged traditional gender roles during this period.
