Alex Portal was born in Pennsylvania and grew up dreaming of the Wild West. After spending time all along the East Coast, he met his wife, Rachel. She soon accepted a position with Deadwood History, Inc., and the two took up residence in Lead, where they live with two cats, Maggie and Bumble. Portal works as a reporter for the Black Hills Pioneer and recently illustrated his first children’s book, But Nana, Who Was Wild Bill?
