Gwen Westerman holds a PhD in English and teaches at Minnesota State University, Mankato, where she strives to make learning applicable to her students’ interests, other courses and long-range goals. She received the Douglas R. Moore Faculty Research Award for her research on Dakota history and language. Westerman co-wrote the Minnesota Book Award-winning MniSota Makoce: The Land of the Dakota with Bruce White and published a Dakota and English poetry collection, Follow the Blackbirds. Her work, including quilts and other art, is inspired by her Dakota family history.
