S. D. Nelson
An enrolled member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, S.D. Nelson has written and illustrated numerous children’s books, including Black Elk’s Vision, Sitting Bull and Red Cloud. He has received two Spur Awards from the Western Writers of America and two Notable Book Awards from the American Library Association, among other honors. A Flagstaff, Arizona, resident Nelson uses acrylic paint which he brushes, sponges, splatters and sprays to create a contemporary interpretation of traditional Lakota images.
