Jerry Wilson was born west of the Cimarron River in Oklahoma, near the homesteads two of his great-grandfathers claimed in the 1892 Run into Cheyenne Arapaho land, an event featured in Across the Cimarron. He has worked as a farmhand, handyman, gas station attendant, oil field flunky, carpenter, preacher, teacher, journalist and managing editor of South Dakota Magazine. He and his wife, Norma, live in a geo-solar house on a Missouri River bluff near Vermillion, South Dakota.
