Brookings and Sioux Falls Events Featured at the 2018 Festival of Books Sept. 20-23

 

The 2018 Festival of Books includes events in Brookings, SD and Sioux Falls, SD.

Sioux Falls Events

A full docket of events will be held in Sioux Falls on Thursday, Sept. 20 at the Washington Pavilion and Siouxland Public Libraries beginning at 10 a.m. You can sort by Sioux Falls events by scrolling below and selecting the "All in Sioux Falls" dropdown under "Venue," or click here to view. 

From award winning tribal writer Joseph Marshall III, featured in 2011 as our One Book SD author, to 2018 Young Readers One Book author Kara Lareau, a variety of children's authors and illustrators will entertain audiences all day. The day concludes with Lareau's 4 p.m. presentation "An Infamous Journey: How I came to Be a Writer, and What I've Learned Along the Way" at Siouxland Public Libraries downtown branch. 

Brookings Events

The Festival kicks off in Brookings with an author reception the evening of Thursday, Sept. 20. Young Readers events begin at 10 a.m. at the Children's Museum of South Dakota in Brookings. You can sort by Brookings events by scrolling below and selecting the "All in Brookings" dropdown under "Venue, or click here to view. 

On Friday, Sept. 21, we'll hold Young Readers events in Brookings at the Children's Museum of South Dakota and in local schools, as well as Brookings events on campus and in the downtown area of Brookings (Central Historic District).

The bulk of Saturday, Sept. 22, will be our author extravaganza in the downtown area, which includes many concurrent events and mass book signing. The Festival concludes with a brunch on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at McCrory Gardens.

The fate of a novel can depend on the first page. It must snap its fingers in agents’ and editors’ faces, shake them by the shoulders, and spark a fire so high that readers leap to the next page. In this workshop, we’ll look at your first page as agents and editors might.

We all want to write that book that readers won't put down, but how do we transform our ideas and characters into a riveting story? This workshop introduces you to the simple but revolutionary Plot Box method of plotting your book. Participants will leave with a Plot Box kit (detailed in event description) as well as a clear map for structuring their story, whether it is memoir or fiction.
