Four Community Studies: China's Yunnan Province
Lee examines studies completed in China's Yunnan Province during the 1930s and 1940s - the height of the Sino-Japanese War. The scholars conducting these studies were largely unknown to each other but were strongly influenced by social anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski. Forced into one small corner of China not occupied by the Japanese, and working under the most challenging conditions, they produced studies that shaped outsiders' perspectives for decades, and are still regarded as exemplars by sociologists and anthropologists worldwide.
