On Rural Journalism: Notes from A Freelance Writer and Author in Middle America
My first book of literary journalism, Zoo Nebraska: The Dismantling of An American Dream, took me ten years to write due to a host of unexpected challenges: a central character who refused to discuss his role in the events, dozens of contradictory narratives from local residents, poor record keeping at the zoo itself, petty gossip, personal antagonism, and so much more. This presentation will focus on the many obstacles encountered in crafting both a book of narrative nonfiction like Zoo Nebraska and the dozens of feature stories I've written on middle America for national publications during my career as a freelance journalist.
