Help SDHC Plan and Execute the Oct. 1-3 Virtual Event

Do you love books, and meeting fellow booklovers? How about chatting with your favorite authors?

If your answer to any of those questions was 'yes,' you might consider volunteering to help with the Virtual 2021 South Dakota Festival of Books. SDHC is actively seeking volunteers for this year's event, which will be held virtually Oct. 1-3. Visit for more details about accessing events.

The Festival of Books, produced by the non-profit South Dakota Humanities Council, has become the state's premier literary event, and one important component is its robust volunteer support system.

Opportunities to Meet Authors and Book Lovers Online

The SDHC staff relies on Festival volunteers during virtual Festival events to manage background logistics like hosting Zoom sessions and introducing speakers.

Literature enthusiasts have said they find the experience fulfilling. Many volunteers return year after year because they enjoy working side-by-side with Festival authors and meeting book lovers, whether the event is online or in-person, from around the region.

"Volunteering for any task at the SD Humanities 'Festival of Books' is such great fun," said volunteer Francie Ruebel-Alberts, a member of the 2021 Festival of Books Steering Committee.

"I have met such interesting people who are presenting, there to hear the speakers or involved with one of the many jobs that need to be done to make the event so great."

Types of Volunteers Needed

Duties of all types must be fulfilled to accommodate the annual Festival, which features more than 50 authors and attendees from all over the U.S. Because SDHC recently pivoted to a virtual event, our needs have changed.
