One Book Reveal Dec. 3: Learn the Title, Meet the Author at our Office in Brookings!

South Dakota Gives Party Offers Unprecedented Opportunity to Meet One Book Author as Selection is Announced

On Dec. 3, readers will have a rare opportunity to meet the One Book author as the selection is announced.

As part of our South Dakota Gives festivities at the SDHC office in Brookings (1215 Trail Ridge Rd. Ste. A) on Tuesday, Dec. 3, we're announcing the 2020 One Book South Dakota — and Young Readers One Book! — at 3:15 p.m. The 2020 One Book author will talk with readers and sign books from 3-5 p.m. in conjunction with the announcement; meanwhile, members of the public are invited to visit anytime from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to participate in a day full of celebratory activities: book giveaways, coffee and holiday treats, office tours and more.

"We're so excited to have the One Book author available to meet members of the public as we announce the selection," said Jennifer Widman, director of the South Dakota Festival of Books and the One Book South Dakota program. "It's a new, fun way to kick off our 2020 common read."

Since 2003, the One Book South Dakota program has encouraged people across South Dakota to read and discuss the same book through the year. Groups receive the current One Book on loan from the SDHC lending library and host a SDHC scholar for their event. The One Book author tours the state during the summer before giving the keynote lecture at the fall South Dakota Festival of Books, which will be held in Brookings Oct. 2-4, 2020.

During the inaugural South Dakota Day of Giving in November 2018, SDHC had a large celebration that netted more than $5,000 in donations. The state's second statewide giving day kicks off at midnight on Giving Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2019, and continues until 11:59 p.m. that night.

South Dakota Day of Giving provides non-profits a chance to highlight their work as donors across the state celebrate generosity by giving to their favorite organizations. Hundreds of South Dakota non-profits are participating, and a group of 54 local nonprofits have joined together as #BrookingsGives to encourage donations for Brookings County non-profits, including SDHC.

If you can't make it to our office, you can donate online at sdhumanities.org/give or mail a check to the address below on Dec. 3 and receive the same prizes as in-office visitors.
