SDHC Awards $400K in COVID-19 Relief to Cultural Organizations

Awards Given to 49 Organizations in 30 Counties

The statewide South Dakota Humanities Council has awarded more than $400,000 to cultural organizations struggling to maintain operations during the coronavirus pandemic.

The CARES grants, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and administered by SDHC, provide unrestricted operating support, humanities program support, or both to qualifying organizations impacted by COVID-19. The grant has kept museums, libraries and other organizations afloat as they redesign their organizations to accommodate coronavirus-related restrictions.

For example, The Journey Museum & Learning Center in Rapid City, forced to operate on half its regular budget due to losses in admission and gift shop revenue, received a much-needed $20,000 grant.

"What SD CARES is doing is giving us the opportunity to heal ourselves a little bit," said executive director Troy Kilpatrick. "It's buying us time to reinvent the way we serve the community."

A total of $414,215 was awarded to 49 organizations in 30 counties.
