Magpie Creative in Rapid City received $2,827 to hold a Winter Camp for youth and adults on Sept. 1-30, 2020. The camp will function under Lakota cultural goals of sharing, cultural vitality, and community building, with one monthly workshop geared towards youth participants and one towards the public. Events, to be held at Racing Magpie, will be free to the public with limited space available and will target Lakota community members as both presenters and attendees.

Homestead Foundation (Western Writers of America) in Rapid City received $6,913 for the 64th Annual Western Writers of America Convention, which will be held Sept. 4-6, 2020, at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn. The convention features tours, keynote presentations, panel discussions, and special events designed to inform and educate writers; the 2020 event will highlight American Indian literature and culture. Sioux Falls Arts Council received $1,000 to fund the White Spruce Chamber Players (WSCP) pre-concert lecture by former South Dakota resident Nigel McBain, composer of “Palazzo,” a new work that is dedicated to the people of Mitchell – “The Palace City.” Originally scheduled as an in-person residency, the event will now feature McBain in a pre-recorded video lecture and take place at 1:30 pm, preceding the concert. The concert will include the performance of “Palazzo” along with works by George Gershwin and Antonin Dvorak.  
 
This event occurs in conjunction with the WSCP’s Sept. 12, 2020 premiere performance of “Palazzo” as part of the Great Plains New Music Festival at the University of South Dakota.
