Standing Together

THE HUMANITIES AND THE EXPERIENCE OF WAR

Standing Together was a 2014 National Endowment for the Humanities initiative directed at veterans’ programming to offer a space for conversations between veterans and civilians.

We partnered with three veterans’ reading and writing groups in Sioux Falls and Brookings. Iraq War veteran Phil Klay appeared at the 2014 Festival of Books. Ron Capps, creator of the Veterans Writing Project, facilitated a two-day writing workshop in Brookings for the veterans’ groups.

INVESTIGATING THE STATE OF THE MEDIA

"Democracy and the Informed Citizen" is the 2018 South Dakota Humanities Council programming initiative that examined the critical role of journalism and the power of the humanities to enrich understanding of local and national issues and inspire citizen engagement

SDHC is one of 49 humanities councils in the U.S. that received funding for the initiative, which was kicked off in South Dakota with a special event at the University of South Dakota April 26.
