Traveling Exhibits

Host a Traveling Exhibit in Your Community

SDHC exhibits are available for an eight-week loan period at a rental fee of $35. Organizations are responsible for the costs associated with returning the exhibit to Brookings

NEW for 2010! Immigrant Program Package

The SDHC is partnering with the South Dakota State Historical Society to offer the following package:

  • Pop-up Kiosk Exhibit: Drawn to the Land: Homesteading Dakota*, telling the story of the homesteaders who poured into Dakota between 1860 and 1920, making a home for themselves and their descendents.
  • Suitcase Education Kit: South Dakota Immigrants, exploring the history and background of ethnic groups that made South Dakota their home.
  • Speakers Bureau Program: Hands On! South Dakota Immigrants Through Objects and Archival Materials, incorporates objects, written records, and photographs to tell the story of immigrant groups who settled in South Dakota.

Please note: Loan period for both the exhibit and education kit in the package is 8 weeks, with the Speakers Bureau program scheduled within that time period. The total cost is $85, plus return shipping on the exhibit and kit. The total cost is $65, if the exhibit/kit is picked up in Pierre. $35 fee will be waived for the SDHC application.

How to Apply

  1. DownloadContact Ronette Rumpca at the South Dakota State Historical Society, 605-773-6011.

  2. If doing the entire Immigrant Program Package, download this application form and mail it with payment to:
    South Dakota Humanities Council
    1215 Trail Ridge Road, Ste. A
    Brookings, SD 57006

  3. After SDHC gets the application, they will send a confirmation letter and evaluation forms to you and the presenter.


Please send your application 4 weeks in advance of the program. The standard $35 fee will be waived for the SDHC application if doing the entire Immigrant Program Package.

South Dakota Humanities Council Traveling Exhibits

The Holocaust

This wall-hanging exhibit containing 40 photos and text displays the atrocities that took place during World War II when Hitler tried to exterminate the Jews and Gypsies in Europe.  Each poster is 26” x 42”.  Approximate Shipping weight: 30 pounds.  Program Benefactor: Gene and Lynne McPherson, Sturgis, SD.

To apply for this exhibit, please complete the above application, enclose a $35 application fee, and mail it to South Dakota Humanities Council, 1215 Trail Ridge Rd., Suite A, Brookings, SD, 57006.

Historical Society Traveling Exhibits

The South Dakota State Historical Society offers many other traveling exhibitions to communities throughout South Dakota. They are available for an 8 week loan period at a rental fee of $85. Organizations are responsible for the costs associated with returned the exhibit.
