Humanities at the Heart of Health Care

Literature & Medicine is a national award-winning reading and discussion program for health care professionals. Participants gather periodically to discuss readings that help them explore their professional roles and relationships with each other and with patients.

The program brings together:

  • Doctors
  • Nurses
  • Receptionists
  • Administrators
  • Physician assistants
  • and anyone else associated with patient care

Outcomes of the Program

Literature & Medicine is an innovative and cost-effective way to improve patient care, job satisfaction, and respect within your healthcare organization. Participants between 2005 and 2008 reported a great or medium increase in:

  • Empathy for Patients: 79%
  • Interpersonal Skills: 64%
  • Communication Skills: 58%
  • Job Satisfaction: 62%
  • Cultural Awareness: 67%

Literature & Medicine in South Dakota

The SDHC has been selected to implement a pilot program for Literature & Medicine beginning with the Sioux Falls’ Royal C. Johnson Veterans Memorial Medical Center. Jay Willms, Center for the Book Director, is in charge of the program. Literature and Medicine was created by the Maine Humanities Council.
