Giving Tuesday is Almost Here! Support the Humanities in South Dakota!

November 29, 2025

We are THREE days away from Giving Tuesday! At the South Dakota Humanities Council, our mission is to celebrate literature, promote civil conversation, and tell the stories that define our state. Giving Tuesday provides opportunities for SDHC to expand our programs and reach more South Dakotans. Here are some ways your contribution supports literature, history, and the arts:

Humanities Café is a bi-weekly program which brings together presenters to discuss important issues affecting Americans. The goal of this program is to be informative and conversational — to discuss issues and bring about a greater understanding of the complexities that lie beneath these issues.

The Young Readers Program provides every 3rd grader in South Dakota with their own copy of a book. Over the past 15 years, more than 101,000 age-appropriate and engaging books have been distributed through this program.

The Festival of Books celebrates literature in South Dakota and beyond by connecting the very best regional and national writers with our state’s readers for conversations, presentations, panel discussions, book signings, and special events. Through workshops and craft talks offered by established authors and publishing professionals, it provides unique support for aspiring writers to craft and share their stories.

The One Book Program encourages people across the state to read and discuss the same book throughout the year. Groups can request the current One Book South Dakota on loan and host an SDHC scholar for their discussion.

Giving Tuesday is happening this Tuesday, December 2, 2025! Founded in 2012, Giving Tuesday’s mission is “to build a world where generosity is part of everyday life. Whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbor or stranger out, showing up for an issue or people we care about, or giving some of what we have to those who need our help, every act of generosity counts, and everyone has something to give.”

At SDHC, we would be honored by your contribution to expand the magic of literature, increase reading accessibility for youth, and highlight the unique stories that give our state its humanity. Join the global movement of generosity today by supporting the humanities: https://donatehumanities.org.

Looking for other ways to support the humanities? We need volunteers to help us prepare a special end-of-year mailing during the week of December 8 – 12! Use this link to sign up: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0548AAAD28A7F5C07-60637431-volunteers.
