Oscar Micheaux: From Homesteading to Hollywood
Learn about Oscar Micheaux, an African American homesteader from Gregory County, SD, who became an author of 7 novels and wrote, produced and at times, acted in 43 movies. The subjects and story lines of his writing and film making took shape from many of his own experiences and influences on the prairies of South Dakota. His work teaches about the challenges of the first farmers and ranchers in Gregory County as well as the trials and tribulations of being Black in America. Along with a slide show presentation and discussion, the program includes a bibliography, clips of Micheaux’s movies, and a display of his original books and other artifacts.
