Poetry on the Road Season 2 Wraps Up Soon
April 26, 2025

It’s been another busy season for the South Dakota State Poetry Society. As they wrap up year two of Poetry on the Road, they are reflecting on the impact of the program across the state.
With events this year in 21 South Dakota communities – including Pierre, Madison, and more – Poetry on the Road provides opportunities for aspiring poets to have a voice through an open mic. Free and open to the public, each event features readings from South Dakota Poet Laureate Bruce Roseland and other SDSPS member poets, as well as local talent.
The program allows participants, including many who have never read in front of an audience, to share their work in a positive, uplifting environment. One reader this year was only four years old, with others ranging from their teens to their 90s, according to Marcella Remund, SDSPS President.
“Poetry on the Road has shown us that the diversity of poets, styles, and subjects reflects the amazing diversity in our state,” Remund said. “It is helping writers of all ages and walks of life learn from each other and grow as writers, and it’s providing opportunities for us to share and celebrate each other’s work.”
SDSPS emphasizes that all are welcome at these events, whether to participate or just to listen. There is one more chance to take in Poetry on the Road this year: Wednesday, May 14, 5:00-7:00 PM at Henry’s Books, 111 East Hudson Street, Spearfish.
