Support the Humanities in South Dakota!

March 29, 2025

Today, the South Dakota Humanities Council faces an uncertain future. Potential government funding cuts threaten to significantly impact our ability to support the humanities in South Dakota, and we need your help.

Now, more than ever, your support is critical in ensuring that literature, history, and cultural experiences remain accessible across our state.

Your continued generosity directly impacts communities, providing books, educational programs, and opportunities that inspire a lifelong love of learning. Read on to learn how your donation makes a difference.

Young Readers Program

This year’s Young Readers One Book is Wings of an Eagle by Billy Mills, Donna Janell Bowman, and S.D. Nelson. Thanks to supporters like you, every third grader in South Dakota will receive their own copy of this inspiring book, which teaches resilience in the face of adversity. Book distribution will take place at the start of the 2025-26 school year.

Festival of Books

We are thrilled to host the 2025 Festival of Books in Spearfish, Sept. 26-28. This beloved event brings together readers, authors, and scholars to celebrate literature and ideas. With your help, we can continue to provide engaging discussions, author panels, and literary experiences for all ages.

Your Support Matters

Your donation sustains these vital programs and ensures the humanities and literacy remain a cornerstone of our communities. Whether large or small, every contribution helps keep literature and cultural schooling thriving in South Dakota. Today, we ask you to support the South Dakota Humanities Council’s mission of celebrating literature, promoting civil conversations, and telling the stories that define our state by making a gift to our organization. Together, we can ensure that future generations have access to the transformative power of books and ideas!
