Celebrate National Reading Month with SDHC & NEH
March 8, 2025

March is National Reading Month, and South Dakota Humanities Council (SDHC) and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) have everything you need to celebrate!
Reading and discussion groups can take advantage of SDHC’s Book Club To Go program. The process is easy. First, browse the list of more than 100 titles in our Lending Library and select one. Then, choose an SDHC scholar to facilitate your discussion if you wish – or supply your own leader if you prefer. Finally, fill out our short application to borrow up to 30 copies of your selection.
SDHC’s Lending Library includes works of fiction, nonfiction, mystery, memoir, history, and poetry. There are books for readers of all ages, including our past One Book South Dakota and Young Readers One Book titles. The most recent additions to the Lending Library are five titles related to the ongoing crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons. Their purchase was made possible by NEH funding through the “United We Stand: Connecting Through Culture” initiative.
To find inspiration for your next trip to a library or bookstore, take another look at the list of authors featured at the 2024 South Dakota Festival of Books. Each presenter’s entry includes at least one recent or notable title, probably including some great reads you missed the first time around!
On a national level, NEH consistently supports writers through various stages of research, writing, and publication, resulting in even more fantastic books! Their list of grant-supported books from the last five years includes prize-winning and critically-acclaimed publications in all areas of the humanities: the arts, history, language and literature, music, philosophy, religion, and social sciences.
With all these options, one month might not be enough! Never fear – SDHC and NEH reading resources are available year-round!
